About the book

‘Bamboos at TBGRI', authored by Dr K.C. Koshy, Scientist documents the rich live collection of various bamboo species in the Bambusetum in the TBGRI campus. Bambusetum (pl. bambuseta) is an area, small or large, where a living collection of bamboos is kept for display, education, conservation and related studies. It may form part of a botanic garden or an arboretum. In bambuseta, various bamboo species and their different hereditary lines (individuals originated from same stock and of similar age) are maintained along with records of their pheno-events such as growth, flowering, fruiting, death and details on progenies.Started in 1987, the bamboo collection at TBGRI has grown into one of the largest in India with 933 accessions spread over an area of 6.59 hectare. This includes species and accessions mostly from the Western Ghats, a sizeable number from the North Eastern States, and a few from abroad, all of which were acclimatized in the Bambusetum. The book provides a picture of the genetic resources of bamboos available at TBGRI. It is expected to be a useful tool for policymakers, taxonomists, breeders, horticulturists and landscape architects, and for future bamboo development activities in the country.
